Dhaba-style Dal Chana is a popular Punjabi dish made with split red lentils (masoor dal) and chickpeas (chana) in a flavorful and spicy gravy. Here's a simple recipe to make it at home:
Ingredients
For the Dal Chana
1. 1 cup split red lentils (masoor dal)
2. 1 cup chickpeas (chana), soaked overnight and drained
3. 2 medium onions, chopped
4. 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
5. 2-3 green chilies, chopped
6. 1 teaspoon ginger paste
7. 1 teaspoon garlic paste
8. 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
9. 1 teaspoon coriander powder
10. 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
11. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
12. 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder to taste
13. Salt, to taste
14. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or ghee
15. Fresh coriandar,ginger slices and green chilies
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Dal and Chana
1. In a pressure cooker, combine the soaked chickpeas, split red lentils, and 4 cups of water.
2. Add turmeric powder and salt.
3. Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until the dal and chana are tender.
Step 2: Prepare the Masala
1. Heat oil or ghee in a pan.
2. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
3. Add chopped onions and saute until golden brown.
4. Add ginger paste and garlic paste. Cook for a minute.
5. Add chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
Step 3: Add Spices and Dal Chana
1. Add coriander powder, garam masala powder, and red chili powder (if using). Mix well.
2. Add the cooked dal and chana mixture to the pan. Stir well.
3. Adjust the consistency and seasoning as needed.
Step 4: Finish and Serve
1. Garnish with fresh coriander,ginger slices and green chilies
2. Serve hot with rice, roti, or naan.
